MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) recorded a career night with six goals and seven total points as the nationally-ranked No. 6 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated host Southern New Hampshire University 18-11 Wednesday night. A total of five players tallied three-or-more points in the Chargers sixth victory of the season.
UNH improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Penmen drop to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) tallied six points with three goals and three assists, while also grabbing five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) each posted hat-tricks.
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) also posted a three-point night with two goals and an assist. The Jackson, N.J. native chipped in with five draw controls and a ground ball.
Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored the Chargers final goal for UNH.
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) each played 30 minutes in goal for the Chargers. McDermott tallied six saves, while Gianotti posted a pair.
Emily King led the Penmen with four goals in the loss.
The Chargers trailed 19-12 in draw controls, but forcer twice as many Penmen turnovers (16-8).
New Haven and Southern New Hampshire played nearly even through the first 12 minutes. A SNHU goal at the 18:07 mark brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Chargers. UNH then rattled off four straight in the next eight minutes to take a 7-2 lead with 10:23 left in the first half. The final 10 minutes featured a pair of Penmen goals and three scores by the Chargers, who held a 10-4 lead at halftime.
Southern New Hampshire opened the second half by gaining possession on the draw and scored three unanswered goals in the first seven minutes. With the lead narrowed to three, 10-7, Fisher sparked another 4-0 run for the Chargers who took a 14-7 lead with 18:56 left. Less than a minute later, SNHU scored one more before another 3-0 run by UNH. O'Brien's 15th goal of the season at the 14:40 mark gave the Chargers their largest lead of the night, 17-8. The Penmen scored three of the final four goals and narrowed the Chargers final margin to 18-11.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, March 28 when it hosts Saint Michael's in another NE-10 matchup at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
