Softball Defeats American International in Tight Contest

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) pitched a complete game and the University of New Haven softball team withstood a late American International College rally as the Chargers downed the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Tuesday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field.

With the win, New Haven is 4-7-1 overall with a 2-2 record in conference and holds a 1-1 record in the Southwest Division. AIC drops to 1-10 overall and is 0-1 in both NE-10 and divisional play.

The Chargers took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning to score the initial run of the game. With one out, Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) walked and moved to second on an errant throw from the AIC catcher on a pickoff attempt. Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) came up next and singled. The ball was bobbled in leftfield, allowing Liptack to score, putting New Haven on top 1-0.

The score remained that way until the fourth when Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) moved Childs to second. Two batters later, Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) tripled down the rightfield line, bringing home Childs to extend the lead to 2-0.

The run proved to be an important one as the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the seventh and loaded the bases with one out before Cabral was able to get a line out before retiring the final batter of the game on strikes to preserve the win.

Cabral (3-3) struck out five, while surrendering just one run on four hits. Offensively, Schiebe went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice.

New Haven is next scheduled to play on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:00 p.m. when it will host Southern Connecticut State in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
