WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) hit two homeruns and had four hits on the afternoon as the University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader with the Adelphi Panthers, winning game one by a score of 5-4 before falling 3-2 in the second game at the UNH Softball Field.
With the split, New Haven is now 8-11-1 overall with a 5-4 record in both the NE-10 and the Southwest Division. Adelphi is now 15-15 with an 8-4 mark in both conference and divisional play.
The first game was the resumption of a game that was suspended on March 25 with the Chargers leading 2-0 in the first inning. Adelphi rallied with three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead.
New Haven battled back in the top of the third inning.
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) was hit by a pitch with one out, followed by a single from
Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk). Childs followed with her first homerun of the season to give the Chargers a 5-3 lead.
Adelphi made things interesting with a run in the sixth, but
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) was able to escape the jam before retiring the Panthers in the seventh to hold on to the win. Cabral delivered six innings of one-run ball to earn the victory.
In the second game, Adelphi scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Childs sliced into the lead in the fourth with her second homer of the day to make it 2-1. After the Panthers scored again in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.
The Chargers battled back in their last frame, as Schiebe reached on a single and moved up on an error. After a passed ball moved her to third, Childs drove Scheibe home with a single to make it 3-2. That was as close as New Haven got, however, as the Panthers were able to close the door.
Offensively for the day, in addition to Childs efforts, Schiebe had two hits and Devlin drove in a pair of runs.
New Haven is back in action on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. when it hosts Merrimack in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader.
