BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team defeated LIU Post 1-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, while the two teams tied 4-4 in the nightcap which was called after seven due to darkness. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) threw a one-hitter in the opener, while Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) went 2-for-2 with a homerun and three RBI in game two.

The Chargers improves to 14-15-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 27-10-1 on the season.

In game one, King pitched all-but one out and allowed one hit through six 2/3 innings. She struck out eight and earned her seventh won of the season. King got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first, while Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) entered with three runners on in the bottom of the seventh and held the Pioneers scoreless.

The game's only run came in the top of the fourth when Courtney Reed (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) drove a bases loaded single through the left side to put the Chargers ahead. Devlin scored the only run after reaching on a single earlier in the fourth. LIU Post also put a pair of base runners on in the bottom of the sixth with two walks, but a line out and ground out stranded them on base.

The bats came alive in the second game as the teams combined for 14 total hits. In the top of the first, New Haven's offense immediately put three runners on base. The first runs of the game came in the top of the third inning when Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) opened the inning with a walk and Devlin gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead with a homerun over the right field fence. LIU Post immediately responded in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs off two hits and a walk to even the game at 2-2 after three.

Devlin's third RBI of the game came in the top of the fourth with a two-out single that drove in Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull). The UNH lead improved to 4-2 in the top of the fourth with a Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) RBI single and a Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) run scored. LIU Post evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth when an infield single and throwing error plated two.

Before the game was called a draw due to darkness, the Pioneers left one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Chargers return to action on Friday, April 24 when Saint Rose travels to West Haven the first of a three game series. Game time is set for 3 p.m. The team will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 in the final regular season home contests for the Chargers.
