WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team concluded its season on Saturday afternoon with a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader split with the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Military Appreciation Day. The Chargers won the opener 4-2 before falling in the second game 5-0.
Â
With the split, New Haven ends the year 16-16-2, 11-9 in the NE-10. New Haven and Le Moyne both finished 9-9 in the Southwest Division, with the Dolphins holding the tiebreaker by virtue of a 2-1 series record in divisional games.
Â
After Saint Rose took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one, the Chargers rallied in the bottom of the inning.
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) reached on an error followed by a single from
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville). On the throw to try to get Palase at first, Williams moved to third. While trying to retire Williams, Palase used some heads up baserunning to take second. Two pitches later, Williams came in to score and Palase moved to third on a wild pitch. Three batters later
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) singled to shortstop, plating Palase, knotting the game at 2-2.
Â
The Chargers broke through again in the fifth. Palase led off with a single.
Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) sacrificed to advance Palase. On the throw to first, the ball sailed over the head of the fielder, allowing Liptack to reach base and Palase to take third. Two batters later, Devlin lifted a sac fly to center, bringing home Palase and giving New Haven a 3-2 lead. The Chargers capped the scoring for the game when
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) doubled with one out and came home on a single two batters later by Williams.
Â
Cabral (8-6) earned the win in relief, going 4.2 shutout innings, striking out six.
Â
The second game did not go the Chargers way, however, as the Golden Knights scored twice each in the second and third innings and once in the fifth to claim the 5-0 win.
Â
Offensively in the twinbill, Palase had five hits and Devliin drove in two runs.
Â
Prior to the game, New Haven honored its senior class of Williams,
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy), Courtney Reed and Jess Spivey# for their contributions to the Chargers during the last four seasons.Â
