WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored two goals and
George Tighe (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Boys College) recorded his first collegiate marker as the University of New Haven men's soccer team won its home opener 3-1 against the Holy Family Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Chargers open the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 1998. Holy Family falls to 0-2-0.
Scoreless into the 18th minute, New Haven struck first. Off a corner kick from
Aurochit Patnaik (Mumbai, India/St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)),
Mawasi Charles (Barataria, Trinidad/St. Anthony's College) headed a ball that was blocked down before Poirier collected the rebound and sent it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Poirier helped to extend the lead again as off a free kick from Patnaik,
Frank Norosky (Groton, Conn./Fitch) headed a ball to Poirier who unleashed a laser from the top of the box, finding the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
In the 74th minute, the Chargers salted the match away as Norosky served the ball across the pitch to the left side for Tighe. The freshman made a quick move to the outside before rifling a shot into the lower right corner for his first collegiate goal.
New Haven held a 15-7 advantage for the contest in shots, including 9-3 in attempts on goal. It also recorded a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Chargers return to action next on Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they face Nyack at 3:00 p.m. at Kayo Field.Â
