Men's Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team hit 14 three-pointers as the Chargers won an overtime thriller against the Assumption Greyhounds, 75-71 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win New Haven is now 5-11 with a 2-8 record in the NE-10. Assumption falls to 6-10 overall and has a 2-9 mark in conference play.
 
Redshirt freshman guard Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) led the Chargers with 19 points, connecting on 6-of-11 from the field. The 19 points for Bourke is his seventh time leading New Haven in scoring, tying junior Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) for the team high. Bourke was one of four Chargers who finished in double figures including sophomore Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) who added 13 points. Senior Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) and Mosley each chipped in 10 points. 

As a team, New Haven finsihed the game shooting 46.4 percent from the field on 26-of-56. More than half of the Chargers field goals came from beyond the three point arc as the 14 made three's came on 33 attempts from long range for 42.2 percent. For just the third time this season, the Chargers outrebounded the Greyhounds as they finished with a 33-32 advantage led by Bourke who pulled down six boards. New Haven also combined for a season-high 17 assists led by Guddemi who dished out five. 
 
New Haven started the game hot from beyond the arc, nailing seven treys in the first 14 minutes of play. Included in that stretch were a pair of triples for Mosley, giving him 128 in his career, pushing the junior into 10th place all-time in program history for made three-pointers. Overall in the first half, the Blue and Gold hit on 9-of-17 shots from beyond the arc and shot 60 percent (15-for-25) overall from the floor, taking a 42-35 lead into halftime.
 
Continuing to shoot well in the second half, New Haven opened a 55-44 lead midway through the second half. The Greyhounds made a push, going on a 19-5 run during the next seven minutes to take a 63-60 lead with 3:09 remaining.
 
After a timeout, the Chargers took a 64-63 lead on a free throw from Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) and a Hunt three-pointer. From there, the two teams traded the lead three times in the last two minutes with New Haven taking a 67-65 lead on a pair of Guddemi free throws with 36.8 seconds left. On their second attempt at the basket, Assumption scored with 9.9 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.
 
In the extra session, the two squads traded baskets for the first four minutes. Tied at 71-71, Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) drained a trey with 36.7 seconds left. Mosley would net a free throw in the waning seconds to seal the win.
 
New Haven is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when it hosts Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. Tipoff from Charger Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
