WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (15-8, 10-3 NE-10) cruised to a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-11, 25-11) of crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday night a Charger Gym. Leading the Chargers was juniors Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who each finished with a match-high nine kills.
HIGHLIGHTS
· The nine kills for Bussey and Martins led seven Charger attackers who combined for a team hitting average of .353, the second-highest team average of the season. Overall, New Haven finished with 38 kills and just eight errors in 85 attacks. The eight errors for New Haven is the third time this season they have finished with under 10.
· Setting up that New Haven offense was a pair of setters, senior Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) and sophomore Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who finished with 19 and 12 assists, respectively. Rios also finished with six kills and a .545 attack percentage.
· Among all hitters for New Haven, Rios' .545 average led the way, while Bussey closed out her night with a .467 average with two errors in 15 attempts. Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) also hit well for the Blue and Gold, finishing with four kills and no errors in eight attempts for a .500 average.
· Defensively, New Haven was led by freshman libero Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) who collected 16 digs, her fourth straight match in double figures.
· Joining her on the defensive end was Rios and Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who added 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
· As a team, the Chargers combined for seven total blocks, led by Peterson who finished with four. Bussey followed with three.
· Crews also led New Haven with two service aces, the only two of the evening for New Haven.

The Chargers close out the regular season going back-to-back with a Friday night match at Stonehill. Opening serve in the Northeast-10 battle is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Merkert Gym. Following Friday's match, the Chargers will enter the Northeast-10 Championship with quarterfinal action set for Tuesday, November 15. The top four teams following the regular season will host a quarterfinal.
