WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team turned in one of its best defensive efforts in recent memory as the Chargers downed the Post Eagles 67-37 in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon. New Haven is now 2-9 on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Â Â Â Â Â The game marked the first time since Jan. 31, 2009 that New Haven held an opponent under 40 points for a game. It is the lowest point total for a Chargers opponent since a 79-28 win against Concordia on Jan. 26, 2008.
- Â Â Â Â Â Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the Blue and Gold with 17 points, all in the second half. Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) had 13 points, 11 in the first half including a trio of three-pointers. King also recorded a career-high with six assists.
- Â Â Â Â Â Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded career-highs with seven points and six rebounds.
- Â Â Â Â Â Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks, marking her 19th consecutive game rejecting an opponent's shot.
- Â Â Â Â Â New Haven is now 9-0 all-time against Post.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
·        The Chargers trailed 5-4 before embarking on a 12-0 run that spanned nearly the final five minutes of the period to take a 16-5 lead.
·        Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) scored seven points and grabbed three steals in the period.
·        New Haven forced 11 Post turnovers in the frame.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
·        Continuing the run that started in the first half, the Chargers held the Eagles more than nine minutes without a field goal in opening up a 21-7 lead.
·        King netted nine points in the frame, hitting all three of her shots from beyond the arc.
·        As a team, New Haven had five steals in the period, giving it 12 for the half.
·        After back-to-back buckets for Post, the Blue and Gold went on a 9-3 run to close the half and take a 30-15 advantage into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
·        Kerr scored 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the period, accounting for more than half of the Chargers 18 points.
·        New Haven went 4-for-5 at the free throw line while Post hit 1-of-6 at the stripe.
·        Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) pulled in five of her game-high tying seven rebounds.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
·        Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) had five points and Talley had five rebounds.
·        The Chargers scored 19 points for their most productive period of the game.
·        New Haven had four steals to close the contest with a season-high 19.
