WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior guard Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) netted 20 points for the team leading sixth time this season as the University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a 64-61 decision to the visiting Adelphi Panthers on Military Appreciation Day at Charger Gym. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 7-16 overall and 4-13 in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi improves to 19-7 on the season and 11-7 in conference play.
Joining Mosley in leading the Chargers from the field was redshirt freshman Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) who finished with 14 points. Overall as a team, all but three of the Chargers 61 points came from its starting lineup, while over the last two games, the starting five has scored 129 of the last 132 points.
Five of Mosley's seven total baskets came from beyond the three point arc and with those five makes, he passed Jamaal Brooks (2001-05) for ninth all-time at UNH. Overall, Mosely's 20 points came on a 7-of-10 shooting effort, while he also made the only free throw he attempts. In addition, he pulled in four rebounds and dished out three assists, tying for the team lead in that category with sophomore Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's).
Bourke's 15 points came on a 5-of-9 shooting effort with four of the five baskets from outside the three point arc. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field, making 20-of-47 field goal attempts. Of the 20 total field goals, 13 came from long range, one shy of the season high for the Chargers. Rounding out the leading scorers for New Haven was Hunt with nine and seniors Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) and Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) with eight and seven, respectively.
Adelphi would score the first five points of the game and hold on to that lead for the entire first half with the Chargers only able to pull as close as one in the opening 20 minutes. That margin came just shy of two minutes into the game when Mosley sank his first of five three pointers.
The Panthers would grow their lead to as much as 11 in the first half, that coming on a pair of occasions. New Haven would cut the lead to eight before the intermission thanks to a pair of free throws from Hunt. Bourke led the Chargers going into the locker room with 11 points.
Coming out of the break, New Haven quickly cut the lead down to a single possession scoring the first six points on a three pointer from Mosley and another from Bourke all in the first 56 seconds. After an Adelphi layup, the Chargers would again net back-to-back baskets to take their first lead of the game on another three pointer from Mosley, with that lead change coming with 16:56 remaining.
After that lead change, the Panthers again grew their lead back to eight with 11:09 remaining in regulation. New Haven responded to that deficit by scoring the next eight points to tie the game at 42. That stalemate came on an old fashioned three point play from Mosley.
Just over three minutes later, the Chargers took their second lead, again on a three pointer but this time out of the hands of Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's). After four straight lead changes, the Chargers built their first multi-possession lead when Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) followed up another three pointer from Hunt with a pair of free throws.
With just over three minutes remaining, the Chargers again took a two-point lead on a three pointer from Mosley before a matching basket from the Panthers gave them back the lead, one their wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way. A three point attempt at the buzzer would prove off the mark as the Panthers snuck out the three point victory.
New Haven will play its final regular season road game when they next take to the court at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night. The match-up between the Chargers and Owls is the second of the season with New Haven knocking off then ranked No. 2 Southern Connecticut 79-66 on December 2. Tip off against the Owls is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the men's game the second in a doubleheader with the women's team.
