WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team held an opponent under 55 points for the sixth time this season as the Chargers earned a defensive minded 59-47 win against the Adelphi Panthers in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division clash in their Play4Kay game on Saturday afternoon.

With the win New Haven is 12-11 overall with an 8-9 record in the NE-10. Adelphi falls to 17-9 and is 10-8 in conference.

As a team, the Chargers held the Panthers to just 20.5 percent (15-for-73) from the floor including a 5-for-33 (15.5 percent) effort in the second half. The Blue and Gold also set a school record for rebounds in a Northeast-10 Conference game, holding a 62-42 advantage on the boards.

Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led New Haven with 24 points while pulling in eight rebounds.
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) had 19 points and nine caroms.
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the squad with 11 boards while
Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) had a career-high nine.

A slow shooting first quarter for both teams saw Adelphi jump out to a 15-11 lead at the end of the period. Trailing 23-19 midway through the second period, the Chargers went on a 9-0 run with Bradford scoring seven of the points to take their first lead of the night at 28-23 with 1:48 to go in the frame. An evenly played final two minutes saw the Blue and Gold take a 34-28 edge into halftime.

Neither team scored in the first two minutes of the third quarter, but following a Sierra Clark layup, New Haven took charge, going on a 17-5 spurt that lasted into the fourth period, opening its largest lead of the night at 49-33. From that point, the Panthers never pulled closer than 10 points. The Blue and Gold sealed the game at the line, connecting on five-of-six free throws in the final 1:28.

The Chargers return to action for a key Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game at cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
