WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) recorded her first career double-double to help lead the New Haven women's basketball team to a 75-70 win against the Le Moyne Dolphins in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Senior Night on Tuesday evening.
With the win, New Haven is now 14-12 and locked down the No. 3 seed for the Southwest Division in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Chargers earned a first round bye and will face Northeast Division No. 2 seed Saint Anselm on Sunday, Feb. 28 in Manchester, N.H. The time of the game has yet to be determined.
Hebert paced New Haven with a career-high tying 24 points and pulled in a career-best 11 rebounds while dishing four assists, collecting three steals and blocking two shots. Fellow senior
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led all scorers and tied a season-high with 26 points, her 14th game with 20 or more points this season.
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and
India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) contributed with nine points each with Dotson collecting three blocks.
Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) scored six and also rejected three shots.
Free throws made a big difference in the final result as the Chargers outscored the Dolphins 27-10 at the charity stripe. The Blue and Gold also held a 36-26 advantage on the boards, including 12 offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second chance points.
After trailing at the end of the first period 17-12, New Haven opened the second quarter on a 16-5 run, hitting on six of seven shots from the floor to take a 28-22 lead. Le Moyne battled back to close the gap and tie the game at 30-30 heading into halftime.
With the game still tight at 46-45 New Haven with 1:30 left in the third period, another Chargers run pushed the lead to 63-48 midway through the fourth quarter. The Dolphins had one more push left, closing to the gap three points on a Lauren Salzbrenner triple with 29 seconds remaining. The Blue and Gold was able to hit a pair of free throws and make a final stop defensively to preserve the victory.Â
