Chargers Drop 1-0 Decision to Pace on Tuesday

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to the visiting Pace University Setters in a single game on Tuesday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10, while Pace improves to 8-5 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.

At the plate, New Haven outhit the Setters 6-1 with all six hits for the Chargers coming from different players and all going for a single base. In the circle, senior Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) suffered the defeat, pitching a complete game and giving up the one run on one hit and four walks. She also struck out 10 batters, the second most this season in a single game.

After trading scoreless first and second innings, the Setters took advantage of a leadoff walk issued to Ashley Lew. She would eventually score with one out recorded in the frame as Haley Hernandez recorded the RBI on an infield groundout.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers loaded the bases with no outs thanks to an error that allowed Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) to reach safely. Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) followed that with a single down the left field line before Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) drew a walk. The Setters worked out of the trouble when Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) drilled a line drive right at the first baseman who turned that into a double play before forcing Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) into a groundout.

The Chargers again looked to threaten in the bottom of the seven with Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) leading off the final frame with a single to center. After being sacrificed to second, she would advance to third on a groundout to second only to be stranded as the final out came on a groundout back to the pitcher.

New Haven will return to action for a three-game series against the American International Yellow Jackets on Friday and Saturday, March 25 & 26. The series opener on Friday is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start, while the first game of the Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
