SHIRLEY, N.Y. –
Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) scored 13 seconds apart, the latter goal coming with just four seconds remaining as the nationally ranked No. 4 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team pulled out a dramatic 15-14 comeback win against No. 16 Dowling on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Mazliah led the Chargers (2-0), recording career highs with four goals and five points in the game.
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) each had three goals while
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) netted two goals and added two assists.
Â
Trailing 14-13 with under a minute remaining, Mazliah was fouled and had a free position attempt at the 0:37 mark. Her shot was on target, but Lauren Young was able to make the save. The rebound went out of bounds and the Chargers maintained possession. On the restart, Fisher fed Mazliah who this time found the back of the net with 17 seconds left, tying the game at 14-14.
Â
Mazliah would factor in again, winning the ensuing draw control and pushing the ball ahead to
Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), who connected with a cutting O'Brien. The junior's shot sailed past the keeper with only four seconds left on the clock, securing the thrilling victory. Â
Â
New Haven started the game well, netting the first marker of the game on a shot by Mazliah just over two minutes in. The Golden Lions responded, outscoring the Chargers 5-1 during an eight minute stretch to take a 5-2 lead with 17:48 remaining in the half. The Blue and Gold roared back with three straight goals, two by Szymanski and one by Belanger, in a span of 63 seconds to knot the game at 5-5.
Â
In a first half full of runs, Dowling scored three in a row to go up 8-5. After three minutes with neither team scoring, Szymanski netted her third goal of the game at the 6:27 mark. Just more than a minute later, Mazliah found the back of the net for her second career hat trick to pull the Chargers within a goal.
Â
Continuing the rally, following a foul, New Haven had a player-up opportunity. On a free position shot,
Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) scored her first of the season to tie the game at 8-8. With just under three minutes remaining in the frame, Belanger notched her second of the contest off an O'Brien feed to put the Chargers up 9-8.
Â
The Blue and Gold opened the second half strong, scoring the first four goals of the period, including two by Fisher, to take a 13-8 lead with 19:16 to go in the contest. Not finished, the Golden Lions chipped into the Chargers advantage and eventually took a 14-13 lead with 2:20 left.
Â
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, March 12 when they will face nationally ranked No. 5 LIU Post on the campus of Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. Opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
