Softball Drops Twinbill at Pace

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division games to the Pace University Setters on Wednesday afternoon. New Haven is now 16-8 overall with a 7-5 record in NE-10 divisional play.
 
Key Players:
  • Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) went 3-for-6 with three RBI in the two games and extended her hitting streak to 11 straight contests.
  • Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) each had three hits in the twinbill.
  • Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) did not allow an earned run, authoring a complete game in the opener. She finished with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings for the day.
How it Happened (Game One):
  • New Haven scored a run in the first inning when Colby singled and moved to second on a groundout. Luzzi singled to drive her home for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Setters responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run after the leadoff batter reached on catcher interference.
  • Pace scored the eventual winning run in the fifth on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt.
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • The Setters opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning and extended the lead with a home run in the third.
  • In the fifth, Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and Palase reached on with singles in front Luzzi who drove both runners home with a two-run hit.
  • After Pace got a run back in the fifth to make it 4-2, the Chargers tied the game as a walk by Schiebe and back-to-back doubles by Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) scored a pair of runs.
  • The Setters scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.

New Haven returns home for a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader to take on the Adelphi Panthers. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
