Softball Splits Twinbill With No. 19 Caldwell

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) threw a one-hit shutout as the University of New Haven softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against No. 19 Caldwell on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers won game one 3-0 before the Cougars took the second contest 8-0 in six innings.

Key Players:
  • King threw her second consecutive shutout and fourth straight complete game, striking out seven to pick up her seventh victory of the season in game one.
  • Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) had two hits in each game including a double and a triple.
  • Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) drove in a pair of runs.
  • Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) extended her hitting streak to 14 games with two singles in the opener.

How it Happened (Game One):
  • With Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) and Luzzi on base after singles in the third, Schiebe delivered a double into rightfield to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
  • Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) followed with a single to right, plating Schiebe for a 3-0 advantage.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases on walks in the fourth, but King got out of the inning with no damage.

How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Caldwell opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second.
  • In the third, Marisa Monasseri hit her 13th homer of the season, a two-run shot to centerfield to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • The Cougars scored a single run in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Turning Point (Game One):
After New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the third, Caldwell loaded the bases on walks in the fourth. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) got out of the inning and allowed just one baserunner the rest of the way, striking out the final batter of the game for her second straight shutout victory.

Turning Point (Game Two):
Monasseri's homer in the third extended the lead to 3-0. That was enough for Sydney Ponto who at one point starting the second inning retired nine batters in a row.

Up Next:
