WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) recorded a career high eight points and scored her 100th career goal on Senior Day at Kayo Field to guide the No. 9 University of New Haven Women's Lacrosse team past Saint Anselm 15-11 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Fisher scored five goals in the victory, equaling her career-high set earlier this season at Merrimack College on March 25th and at LIU Post on April 24, 2014. Junior
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and senior
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) each netted three goals, and junior Caitlyn O'Brien and sophomore
Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) each scored twice for New Haven (11-4 overall, 9-2 NE-10).
Â
Defensively, seniors
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) and
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) split game action between the pipes. Combined, the captains performed very well, saving a combined five shots. McDermott also earned her sixth victory of the season.
Â
Saint Anselm (6-7 overall, 5-6 NE-10) scored first in the match from a goal by Erica Mattila. The goal came only one minute and eight seconds into the match, however Fisher answered 4:53 later, netting her first goal of the game, assisted by Caitlyn O'Brien. The Hawks then opened the game up, scoring three straight goals, all within four minutes of each other.
Â
Shortly after, senior Szymanski and Fisher led the offensive attack, finding the back of the net three times. Fisher scored once again for the Chargers with 2:46 remaining in the half, followed up by an unassisted goal from Saint Anselm's Molly back to give the Hawks a 7-6 edge heading into halftime.
Â
The Chargers then put together a second half attack that never let down, outscoring the Hawks 9-4 in frame. Belanger scored first to give the Chargers an 8-7 lead, a lead that the Blue and Gold did not let go of for the remainder of the game. Fisher then scored her first goal of the second half at the 13:08 mark. It was both her 34th of the season and her 100th career goal for New Haven. She becomes the thirteenth Charger in New Haven Women's Lacrosse history to reach the milestone.
Â
The offense quickly shut the door with 4:58 remaining in the second half, when the Chargers scored three consecutive goals from Mazliah, Belanger, and Fisher.
Â
New Haven returns to action for its final regular season home game of the 2016 season, when it takes on the Southern New Hampshire Penmen in a critical NE-10 match on Wednesday, April 27. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
