Chargers Drop Divisional Game to Le Moyne 6-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team opened its divisional series against the Le Moyne Dolphins with a 6-0 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers and Dolphins second game of the afternoon was cancelled with the remainder of the series to be played on Sunday with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.

New Haven finished the game with five hits, compared to six for the Dolphins, with all six of the Chargers hits coming from different players. Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) would provide the only extra base knock of the day for the Chargers, a double with one out in the second inning, however she was left stranded at third. Overall, the Blue and Gold left four runners on base.

Joining Cardenales with one of the six UNH hits was catcher Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill), third baseman Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay), second baseman Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and freshman Rachel Gilmore (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) who had dropped a single into shallow left field in a pinch hit opportunity in the sixth inning. Gilmore has now hit safely in each of the last four games and is now a perfect 5-of-5 with two RBI in those appearances.

In the circle, senior Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) suffered the loss and is now 4-3 on the season. In five-plus innings of work, King allowed the six Le Moyne runs, all earned, on six hits and five walks. She also struck out a game-high eight batters. Sophomore Alyssa Monteverde (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) came out of the bullpen for the Chargers, pitching the finals 1.1 innings. She would retire all four batters she faced in order.

Le Moyne broke the scoreless draw in the fifth inning, scoring a single run on three hits with what turned out to be the game-winning tally coming on a single to center from left fielder Allison Reynolds. The Dolphins added to their tally with five runs in the sixth inning, putting the game out of reach for New Haven.
