Garden City, N.Y. – The No. 12 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-3 decision to the top seeded and No. 1 Adelphi Panthers on Saturday at Motamed Field. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 13-6 on the season and will await word of a potential third straight NCAA Championship appearance.
Three different Chargers provided the UNH tally's with Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) all finding the back of the net. Senior Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) suffered the loss between the pipes for the Blue and Gold, her fifth in 11 decisions. She would close out the contest with six saves.
Adelphi opened the scoring with a pair of free position attempts in the first 78 seconds of the game and never looked back from that early lead. The Chargers would muster a pair of shots over the first 20 minutes of the game with each of those finding the big stick of the Panthers keeper Taylor Hayes. During the span, the Panthers were able to extend their lead to 4-0.
Mazliah, a sophomore attacker, opened up the scoring for the Blue and Gold when she scored with just under nine minutes remaining, breaking the stalemate. The goal for Mazliah was her 26th of the season while she has at least one point in each of the last nine games. That scoring play for Mazliah began with a big save on the other end of the field for senior netminder Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford), her third of the day.
New Haven would net one more tally in the opening half, taking a 6-2 deficit into the break. O'Brien would score the second UNH goal of the day when she connected with classmate Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) for a player up tally. The goal for O'Brien was her 37th of the year tying her with Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) for the second most on the team.
The Chargers opened the second half with their third goal of the afternoon Fisher, the Northeast-10 Conference Midfielder of the Year, extended her team lead in the goal column. Fisher would net her 42nd of the season on a free position attempt less than four minutes into the half.
The Panthers would go on to score seven straight goals and hold UNH without a score over the final 25 minutes of the game to take a 13-3 victory to advance to the NE-10 Championship game.
