WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team turned in an outstanding defensive effort, holding Southern New Hampshire to 25 percent shooting as the Chargers won their second straight contest, 59-41 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, New Haven is now 4-13 overall and 3-9 in the NE10.
"We had a great team defensive effort and played with a ton of energy and pride in front of our alumnae," said head coach LaTonya Watson. "We're really beginning to embrace our team DNA."
After an even first four minutes, New Haven started to pull away near the midway mark of the opening period, using an 11-2 run to take a 17-9 lead with 3:18 left in the quarter. After trading a pair of baskets, an 11-0 run for the Penmen gave them a 24-21 lead early in the second quarter. The Blue and Gold responded as the two teams played a back and forth game for the remainder of the period with New Haven taking a 31-29 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Chargers came out of the locker room and methodically extended the lead, scoring 11 of the first 15 points of the period, taking a 42-31 lead midway through the third period. From that point, the defense took over for New Haven, allowing just three field goals and nine points in the final 15 minutes of play.
Prior to the game, the women's basketball team hosted its annual alumnae game, drawing players from all eras in program history. During the contest, the alumnae were honored, with a special recognition to the players from the 1987 NCAA Division II National Championship team.
HIGHLIGHTS
- New Haven held Southern New Hampshire to 25 percent (15-for-60) from the floor for the game including just 13.8 percent (4-for-29) in the second half, while allowing just 12 points after intermission.
- Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a personal best 14 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive glass. She also had three steals and two blocks.
- Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) and Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored 11 points each. It marks the third game in a row that Trowell has reached double figures, a feat she hadn't accomplished in her first 54 career games.
- Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had a career-high nine points and matched a personal best with seven rebounds. Fellow freshman Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) scored six points and pulled in nine boards with four blocks. It is the fourth time this season she has rejected four or more shots.
- The Chargers recorded 15 assists in the game, matching their season high. They also had 51 rebounds, the second time this season they eclipsed the half century mark (54 – Chestnut Hill).
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
- Trowell raced out to a hot start, scoring seven points in the opening 10 minutes.
- Trailing 7-6, New Haven went on an 11-2 burst to take a 17-9 lead with 3:18 left in the period. The team connected on all five of its field goal attempts during the span with Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) scoring five points.
- As a team, New Haven shot 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the floor in the opening frame.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
- The Penmen started the quarter strong, scoring the first seven points of the period, extending a run that started with a pair of free throws that ended the first.
- New Haven responded with a 6-2 spurt of its own, retaking the lead at 27-26 with 2:29 left in the frame before holding a 31-29 advantage at the half.
- The lead changed six times and there were two ties in the stanza.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
- Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored five of her nine points in the period.
- The Chargers connected on two of their three attempts from beyond the arc, one each from Talley and Kerr.
- Southern New Hampshire shot 3-for-17 in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
- The Blue and Gold outscored the Penmen 17-6 in the final 10 minutes with Oge dropping seven points with four rebounds.
- The Chargers pulled in six offensive rebounds in the frame, helping them to eight second chance points and 10 points in the paint.
- New Haven had six assists on seven made baskets in the frame.
- The defense had one of its best stretches of the season, allowing Southern New Hampshire to connect on just one of 12 shots while also forcing seven turnovers.
