Women's Tennis Earns Sixth Win with Dominant 8-1 Victory over Saint Rose

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team earned their sixth win of the season on Friday afternoon, taking down the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights by a convincing 8-1 score. It is the first time since the 2013-14 season since the team has reached the six-win mark.

New Haven swept doubles play, first with freshmen Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) winning with an 8-2 score at the No. 1 spot. Junior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and sophomore Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) dominated at the No. 2 doubles court, blanking their opponents, 8-0. Junior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and sophomore Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) got a win by default at No. 3 doubles.

The Chargers played very well in singles play, with three players not allowing Saint Rose to win a game. Rodriguez (No. 1), Mercurio (No. 4), and junior Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) (No. 5) all dismantled their opponents in straight sets, 6-0. Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) fought to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and sophomore Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) got a win by default at No. 6 singles.

With the win, the Chargers conclude the fall conference season with a 5-7 mark in the NE10. The team wraps up the 2017 fall season this Sunday, October 15th as they host University of the Sciences for a non-conference match at the New Haven Tennis Courts. Match time is set for 1:00 pm.
