WALTHAM, Mass. – The inaugural University of New Haven field hockey season came to a close on Friday evening as the Chargers fell to the Falcons by a 12-0 score at the Bentley University Turf Field.
Bentley scored first in the fourth minute before freshman
Maecy Chlebowski (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) got a shot on goal on the Chargers next possession, saved by Bentley goalkeeper, Tatiana Naclerio. Bentley remained strong throughout the remainder of the match and eventually ran away with the win.
In the cage, freshman
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made 14 saves against the Falcons, improving her season total to 237 saves and a .778 save percentage.
"Overall, I am happy with our first season," said head coach
Kelsi Lykens. "Although we faced many challenges, I believe our team was able to find the small wins and see extreme improvements from start to finish. I am anxious to get individual time with each of our athletes and work on the skills that are necessary for future success. With hard work this spring and the addition of a talented incoming class, I am excited to see what the 2018 season will bring."
On the inaugural season, the Chargers scored two goals, first against American International and next versus Southern New Hampshire. The team had 24 total shots with 10 shots on goal. Freshman
Shelby Card (Milanville, Pa./Honesdale) led New Haven with seven total shots, three of them on goal on goal, followed by sophomore
Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) with two shots on target. Chlebowski, freshman
Nina Bazan (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), sophomore
Irkania Coronado (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) and senior
Ashley Higgins (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) each recorded one shot on goal on the 2017 season. New Haven got a season-high 10 shots against Mercy on October 25
