Men's Soccer Falls on Senior Day to Saint Rose

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights 3-1 on Friday evening at Kayo Field in the final game of the 2017 season. Prior to the Northeast-10 match, the Chargers honored seniors Mason Rivera (Preston, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), Colin McFarlane (Suffield, Conn./Suffield), Brian Rebelo (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), and Frank Norosky (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) for their contributions to the men's soccer program.

The Chargers struck first in the seventh minute of the match when junior Sukrija Dudic (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) received a pass from freshman Estanislao Desseno (Merlo, Buenos Aires/Saint Patrick College) and sophomore Pablo Perez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) and fired the ball to the top left corner of the net. Graduate student Simao Sousa Branca (Porto, Portugal/Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto) and junior Mawasi Charles (Barataria, Trinidad/St. Anthony's College) each had a shot on goal, both saved by the Saint Rose keeper. The Chargers defense held the Golden Knights scoreless for the remainder of the first half.

Saint Rose came out strong to start the second half with two quick shots that were both blocked by the defense, but broke through in the 69th minute when Saint Rose's Paulo Sdoia fired a shot to the low left corner of the box. Saint Rose scored two more times in the second half to secure the win. New Haven had a couple of late chances when Dudic had a header shot that just missed the net and Perez took another shot on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) had seven saves on the night and finished the season with 115 saves and a .757 save percentage. Lorusso played every minute in between the goal posts this season for the Chargers, amounting to a total of 1571:31 minutes.

The Chargers concluded the season with a 3-13-1 overall mark and a 3-9-1 in the NE10.
