SPARKILL, N.Y. – Junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored a team-high 13 points at Aquinas Hall on Wednesday evening as the University of New Haven women's basketball team fell to the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 56-34 in a non-conference game.
Kerr finished as the only double-digit scorers for the Chargers, while also adding seven rebounds and two steals on the evening. Freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) finished as the second-leading scorer with eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led on the glass with six boards on the night and also had one block. As a team, New Haven out-rebounded the Spartans with a 36-30 advantage.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
- Saint Thomas opened up the game on fire in their home opener, starting off on a 9-1 run within the first five and a half minutes. The Chargers pulled themselves within six with four straight points by Kerr.
- The Spartans held control the remainder of the quarter, pulling their lead to 15 points at the end of the first break.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
- New Haven's first field goal in the second quarter came from Wormack with a hand from Pergola.
- STAC controlled the pace, leading by as many as 20 points until just over three minutes left in the first half.
- New Haven closed out the half with five straight points, first with a layup by Kerr, and three-straight Charger free throws made by senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) and Kerr.
- Junior Katie Oge had a block late in the first half, rejecting a layup by Chelsea Murphy.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
- Senior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) got the scoring started in the third quarter with a jump shot just 30 seconds in.
- The Spartans scored three-straight field goals before Wormack was fouled but hit her second basket of the game with a minute and a half left in the third and followed that up with a block at the other end, 30 seconds later
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
- Pergola made the first shot of the final stanza, assisted by Trowell.
- Sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had her second block of the season, rejecting a Spartan shot with 4:12 left in the game
- New Haven went on an 8-0 run that spanned less than a minute with Oge and Pergola making a field goal each before Kerr added four more points.
