GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Six different players reached double-figures in scoring as the University of New Haven men's basketball team edged out Adelphi University, 84-79, on the road Saturday in their first Northeast-10 matchup of the season at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
It was the first time since Feb. 23, 2013 against Southern Connecticut State that the Chargers had six players finish in double-figures. Senior
Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) led the way offensively with 16 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Despite struggling from the field, Upchurch was a cool 10-12 from the free-throw line, including going 4-4 in the final 90 seconds. Fellow senior
Mihailo Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) followed with 15 points, while junior
Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) and sophomore Roy Kane Jr. dropped in 13. Sophomores
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) and
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Vasic also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while Kane Jr. added seven rebounds and three steals. As a team, New Haven held a 40-29 advantage on the glass which included 11 offensive boards, leading to 12 second-chance points.
FIRST-HALF NOTES:
- Bourke opened the scoring for the Chargers with a three-point bucket at the 17:56 mark to end a 7-0 run by the Panthers to begin the contest.
- After trailing by 10 points seven and a half minutes in, the Chargers put together a 9-0 run with buckets by four different players to cut the deficit to one.
- An 8-0 run just past the midway point of the half gave New Haven their first lead when Upchurch converted a three-point play to put the Chargers on top, 29-27.
- A 15-2 run by Adelphi gave them their largest lead of the contest at the 2:39 mark of the first half.
- The Chargers closed the half on a 6-0 run to trail, 42-37, at the intermission.
SECOND-HALF NOTES:
- The New Haven run continued to start the second half, scoring 15 unanswered to take the lead, 46-42.
- A Vasic layup at the 10:38 mark of the half gave the Chargers their largest lead at 10 points, 62-52.
- The Panthers took the lead for the final time with 6:52 to play, 70-69, capping off a 10-0 run.
- The Chargers went 8-11 at the charity stripe in the final 4:30 to hold on for the 84-79 victory.
- New Haven shot 57 percent from the field (16-28) and 57 percent (4-7) from beyond the arc in the second half.
- The Chargers held a 22-11 advantage in the rebound column over the final 20 minutes.
