WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team came up short in a defensive struggle with The College of Saint Rose, 66-57, Saturday afternoon at Charger Gym.
Sophomore
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) led the Chargers with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting off the bench. Senior
Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists. Julian Lipinski led three Golden Knights in double-figures with 20 points on 70 (7-10) percent shooting.
Saint Rose held a slight edge in the rebounding department, pulling down 31 boards to New Haven's 27, including a 7-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. As a team, New Haven shot 44 (20-45) percent from the field, including 41 (11-27) percent from three-point territory.
FIRST HALF NOTES:
- Saint Rose jumped out to a 12-point advantage (14-2) just over five minutes into the contest, starting the game 6-for-9 from the field, while New Haven started 0-for-5.
- Sophomore Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) cut the deficit down to seven points at the 7:30 mark with a jumper that capped off a 12-7 burst for the Blue and Gold.
- The Golden Knights ended the half on a 11-3 run to take a 34-19 advantage into the locker room.
- Saint Rose shot 52 (14-27) from the field in the opening 20 minutes while the Chargers were held to just 29 (6-21) percent from the floor.
SECOND HALF NOTES:
- The Golden Knights scored the first seven points of the second half to cap off a streak of 13 unanswered tallies to take their largest lead of the contest, 41-19.
- Upchurch, Rowland, and senior Joseph Doganiero (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) connected on three consecutive three-pointers to make it 45-33 at the 14:56 mark of the stanza.
- Sophomore Kessley Felizor and senior Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) combined for three layups to cut the deficit down to single-digits, 52-43, with 9:21 remaining.
- Both squads went scoreless for nearly four and a half minutes late in the half, before Rowland put home a layup to make it a nine-point game (60-51) with just under two minutes remaining.
- New Haven shot much better in the second half, hitting on 14-of-24 attempts for a 58 percent clip, but the Golden Knights responded with a 52 percent mark of their own on 12-of-23 shooting.
