WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) netted a career-high 36 points as the University of New Haven women's basketball team (5-6, 1-5 NE10) closed out 2017 in style with a 91-60 win over the Post University Eagles (2-8, 1-3 CACC) at the Drubner Center on New Year's Eve.
Kerr was impressive all day, shooting 74-percent (14-of-19) from the field and 80-percent (4-of-5) from beyond the arc. Her 36 points were the most by a Charger since
Aquillin Hayes '15 scored 32 points against California Baptist on March 24, 2015, and her 14 made field goals were the most since
Lauren Hebert '16 shot 10-of-18 at Saint Anselm on February 28, 2016. At the halfway mark, Kerr had already matched her career-high in scoring with 27 points.
Behind Kerr, three other Chargers finished in double-digit scoring with freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) who registered 15 points on 50-percent shooting, her fifth game this season above the 10-point barrier. Junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) added 13 points and sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) chipped in 10.
Senior
Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) had two career-highs in the win, first shattering her personal-rebounding record with nine, defeating her previous career-best of four boards at AIC earlier this season. She also doubled her career-high in assists with six, tying the most of any Charger this season. Wormack also tallied nine rebounds in her fifth straight game and sixth time overall this season.
As a team, New Haven's 91 points were the most since the Chargers defeated Le Moyne in February of the the 2012-13 season, 95-52. As a team, the Blue and Gold finished shooting 55-percent, a season-best, and the 31-point margin of victory was also the largest since last season when New Haven also defeated Post, 67-37.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven exploded onto the floor with 23 of the game's first 25 points, including a 20-0 run that spanned 6:23. In the stretch, five different Chargers scored, including Kerr and Cubbage who combined for 12 of those 20 points.
- Kerr hit a three-pointer with two made free throws and Pergola added five more points as New Haven had a dominant 33-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- The Chargers held the Eagles to just 1-of-14 from the field and capitalized on 12-of-17 attempts from the floor in the period.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- Post got some momentum to start off the second, scoring seven points in the first 2:27. The Chargers answered with a 15-6 run to extend the lead back to 34 points.
- Kerr connected on a layup with 24 seconds remaining in the first half as New Haven took their largest lead of the game (37 points), 56-19. Post hit a three-pointer five seconds before the halftime buzzer, giving the Chargers a 34-point lead at halftime.
- New Haven stayed hot on 56-percent shooting in the second quarter, helping the team to a combined 63-percent field goal effort in the first half. New Haven also converted on 5-of-9 three-point attempts and shot 7-of-9 from the stripe.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- Post started the second half strong on a 14-2 run, including nine unanswered points as the Eagles closed the deficit to 24 points. The Chargers retained dominance however, following with their own 10-3 run.
- The Eagles closed out the quarter with four more points as New Haven led heading into the fourth, 73-43.
- Kerr reached the 30-point mark with a jump shot assisted by sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) with 2:27 remaining in the third.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven shot 55-percent from the field in the final stanza, where Cubbage scored eight of her 13 points in the final ten minutes including the game's final two field goals.
- Junior Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made the only Charger three-pointer of the quarter, collecting a pass from Smith with just under three minutes left in the game.
As the calendar year changes to January, the Chargers will turn their focus back to Northeast-10 play when they tip off 2018 against the Saint Anselm Hawks on the sixth annual Class at the Court Day.
