WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) connected on a running floater with 13.2 seconds remaining as the University of New Haven women's basketball team downed the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 60-57 on Senior Night at Charger Gymnasium. New Haven is now 7-17 on the season with a 5-13 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Chargers got off to a good start, jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead thanks to a pair of baskets by Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) sandwiching a layup by Cubbage. That four point edge was the largest lead for either team for the remainder of the first period as the Blue and Gold held a slim 16-15 lead at the end of the stanza. The tight matchup continued in the second as the Chargers held a 26-22 lead with 3:49 remaining before an 8-0 Owls run put Southern Connecticut on top 30-26, helping SCSU take a two-point lead into halftime.
The Owls maintained the lead through the midway mark of the third quarter as a free throw from Murphy Murad gave SCSU a 38-34 lead at the 4:58 mark. On the ensuing possession Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) connected on a three-pointer, the first of three straight treys for New Haven, propelling the Chargers on 15-4 run to close the period with a 49-42 lead.
Undaunted, the Owls came back, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the fourth period, taking a 52-51 lead on a Taylor McLaughlin layup at the 5:46 mark. Neither team held more than a three point advantage the remainder of the game as SCSU went up 57-54 with 2:46 left. New Haven closed the game strong, scoring the final six points of the contest. Trailing 57-56 and with time winding down on the shot clock, Cubbage came off a screen at the top of the arc and drove to the right blocks before lifting a floater that tapped the back of the iron twice before falling through the net. A pair of free throws from Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) capped the final result.
Prior to the game, the women's basketball program honored India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) and Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) for their three years of dedication each to the Chargers.
