Starek Wins 300th Game at New Haven as Softball Wins Twice to Open Season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven softball team got complete game efforts from Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) and Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) as the Chargers won both of their games at the Snowbird Freezeout on Friday. New Haven downed Glenville State 5-0 for the 300th career win for head coach Jen Starek at New Haven before coming from behind to defeat Lock Haven 5-3.

New Haven 5, Glenville State 0
The Blue and Gold got all the offense it needed for the game in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs. Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) walked and advanced to second on a throwing error when Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) reached on a fielder's choice. A single by Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) scored Vaughan and moved Whitlock to third where she stood when Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) lifted a sac fly to left to bring home the second run of the inning.

In the second, the Chargers added to the lead when Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) homered in her first collegiate at-bat. Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) walked and advanced to third on a single by Vaughan before scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. New Haven tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Vaughan reached on a three-base error by the left fielder and scored on a Whitlock ground out.

Meanwhile in the circle, Stonebraker was masterful. She did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and surrendered just two in the game. She walked two and struck out six in recording a shutout in her first collegiate appearance.

New Haven 5, Lock Haven 3
Lock Haven jumped on top in the first inning as on the first three pitches of the game, the Bald Eagles had a runner reach on an error, a sacrifice and a double, plating the opening run. Two batters later, a second double scored another run to put LHU on top 2-0.

The Chargers battled back with a run in the third when with one out, Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a DeLeo single and scored on a wild pitch. Lock Haven got the run back in the top of the fourth on a Madison Mathes homer to put the lead at 3-1.

Undaunted, New Haven tied the game in the fourth. Whitlock led off the inning with an infield single and advanced two more bases when the throw to first sailed into right field. Rounding third, Whitlock scored as the relay to the plate skipped by the catcher, slicing the lead to 3-2. Two batters later, Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) singled. With Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) pinch-running, Alycia Marsello (North Kingstown, R.I/Prout) doubled, moving Derosia to third for Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) who delivered a sacrifice fly to score the run and tie the game at 3-3.

The Bald Eagles had their chances as they had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs in each of the last four innings, however Butts was able to work her way out of trouble each time, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers broke through as Whitlock singled to right and Luzzi walked, opening the inning. After a fielder's choice erased Whitlock at third, Marsello walked to load the bases. Schiebe came up big again, singling through the middle to plate Luzzi and give New Haven a 4-3 lead. After a fly out, Liptack stood in as a pinch-hitter and singled to score Vanessa Strohm (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) who had come on as a pinch runner.

Lock Haven threatened in the seventh, opening the inning with a double, but the Chargers were able to get the final three batters to preserve the win.

Butts got the win, going the distance, scattering eight hits while allowing one earned run. She struck out four batters in the contest.
