Chargers Fall to No. 24 Le Moyne 61-47 in NE10 Quarterfinal Match-up

Syracuse, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team (15-14, 9-11 NE10) dropped a 61-47 decision on the road at No. 24 Le Moyne on Sunday afternoon, eliminating the Chargers from the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was freshman Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) who finished with 17 points, making four field goals in 11 attempts, including a pair from outside the three point arc. He also finished 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Joining Kane in leading the offense was junior Mihailo Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) who finished with 14 points, converting all but three of his nine field goal attempts.

As a team, New Haven shot 32.6 percent for the game, making 15 field goals in 46 attempts. Overall, three of the 15 field goals came from beyond the arc while New Haven capitalized on 15 trips to the free throw line, making all but one, for a 93.3 percent average.

FIRST HALF NOTES

·         Vasic broke an early 6-0 run for the Dolphins with a three pointer, his first points of the night and just his second three pointer of the season. That bucket was the first of two-straight for the Chargers as a layup from Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) pulled the Blue and Gold within a bucket, 10-8, with 12:48 to play in the half.

·         The Chargers responded to a 7-0 run by the Dolphins with a second chance opportunity as Vasic tipped in the rebound. That bucket was the first of back-to-back for the Chargers as Kane followed with a pullup jumper to cut the deficit to five.

·         Following a jumper for the Dolphins, the Blue and Gold went on an 8-2 run to pull it back to a one possession game for the first time in nearly seven minutes. Included was five points from Kane as well as an old fashioned three point play from Vasic.

·         Kane would provide the final points of the half for either team with 90 seconds remaining when he stepped back to hit from outside the arc and pull the deficit to 28-27. That three from Kane was part of a 15-7 rally for the Chargers to end the half. During that run, New Haven would finish a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, including a pair of three pointers, with Kane scoring 10 of the 15 points.

·         Kane finished the first half with a game-high 13 points as he converted four of his seven field goal attempts including a pair of three pointers. He also finished 3-of-4 from the field.

·         Joining Kane in leading the Chargers was Vasic who finished with eight points as he converted all but one of his four field goal attempts.

·         As a team, New Haven shot 41.7 percent in the first half, making 10-of-24 attempts with three of those from long range. The Chargers made four of their five attempts from the free throw line, while defensively, the Blue and Gold held Le Moyne seven points under their season average of 35 points in the opening half.

SECOND HALF NOTES

·         On the second possession of the half, Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) opened the scoring for either team with a jumper off a Le Moyne turnover. That bucket provided the first lead of the day for the visitors 29-28.

·         After back-to-back three pointers from Le Moyne's Anthony Richards provided the largest Dolphin lead of the day, 41-31, the Blue and Gold responded with a drive down the middle by Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) for two. The Dolphins responded by scoring the next seven points to expand their double digit lead.

·         New Haven would manage a pair of 4-0 runs over the next six minutes but was unable to pull back into single digits.

·         Vasic led the Chargers in the second half with six points on 3-of-5 shooting while Kane, Bourke and UpChurch all added four points each in the half.

·         As a team, New Haven shot 22.7 percent in the second half, making five of 22 field goal attempts and finishing without a long range basket. The Chargers did finish perfect at the line in 10 attempts.
