WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Three players hit homeruns and the University of New Haven softball team got outstanding performances in the circle each from Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) as the Chargers swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from the Saint Anselm Hawks, winning game one 4-0 and taking the second contest 8-2.
The Blue and Gold got all the offense it needed in the opener in the first inning as Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) each homered, their second and first of the year respectively. Butts handled the rest from there, not allowing a hit until the sixth and finishing off her first career shutout.
In the second game, New Haven scored in every inning but the third. Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) started the offense with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, her second long ball of the season. The Chargers then added single runs in the second and fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth. In the circle, Stonebraker picked up her second win of the season allowing one earned run, scattering five hits.
Overall for the day, five players had multi-hit games, led by Devlin with four. Whitlock delivered three hits while Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay), Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) each had two.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- New Haven jumped out to a quick lead as a pair of two-run homers by Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) put the Chargers up 4-0 at the end of one inning.
- From there, both pitchers took over. Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, pitching her first career shutout and her seventh complete game in as many starts. Her counterpart, Sam Hennequin, settled in and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts.
- Offensively, Devlin led the Blue and Gold with two hits.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning from Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School), Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) got New Haven on the board in the bottom of the frame, leading off the inning with her second homer of the year. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Devlin singled home Whitlock who had singled and stolen second.
- In the second, the Blue and Gold added to the lead as after a single and error put Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) on third, Whitlock plated her with an RBI groundout. The duo struck again in the fourth as a DeLeo single and stolen base preceded a Whitlock single to score the runner and make it 4-0. The Hawks tallied a run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-1.
- New Haven salted the game away with two runs each in its final two trips to the plate. After a Devlin double led off the fifth, Liptack singled her home to make it 5-1. Alexandria Cunkle (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) followed with a double to plate Liptack. Whitlock walked to lead off the sixth, moved to third on a Luzzi single and scored on a wild pitch. Luzzi would score during the next at-bat on a throwing error by the Saint Anselm pitcher.
- Stonebraker came through with her second complete game of the season, striking out three.
- 10 different New Haven players had hits in the game.
