Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores Late in Game One, Early in Game Two in DH Sweep

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) reached base five times and stole two bases and the University of New Haven pitching staff did not allow an earned run as the Chargers swept a doubleheader from the Post Eagles, winning game one 1-0 in eight innings before taking game two 7-1 on Thursday.

In the opener, the pitching was excellent as both Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Brianna Koref each took a shutout into extra innings. After Butts worked around a leadoff baserunner in the top of the eighth, Luzzi doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout before she scored on a Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) double for the winning run.

In the second game, the Chargers jumped out early as after a walk by Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) and a double by Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), Luzzi cracked her first homer of the season to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0. New Haven added four more runs in the fifth to put the game away, Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) pitched well, earning her fourth win of the season with five shutout innings.

Offensively on the day, Luzzi led the Chargers with five hits, four of them for extra bases. Schiebe, Vaughan, Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Erin Stever (Parish, N.Y./Altmar Parish Williamstown) each had two hits with Schiebe driving in three runs.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams were handcuffed by good pitching until extra innings when New Haven finally dented the scoreboard. With one out, Luzzi doubled and moved to third on a Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) groundout. After a walk by Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Schiebe came up and drove in her sixth run of the week, doubling home Luzzi for the 1-0 win.
  • In the circle, Butts pitched her second shutout of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out two. She also completed her ninth game in as many starts.
  • Luzzi, Liptack and Stever each had two hits for the Blue and Gold with Stever reaching base safely three times.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chargers jumped on the board early as after a leadoff walk by Vaughan and a double from Whitlock, Luzzi clocked a three-run homer.
  • The score stayed 3-0 until the fifth when New Haven struck again. Luzzi singled and stole second and third. Devlin walked and stole second. Liptack walked to load the bases for Schiebe who brought two more runs home with a single. Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) followed with a double, plating Liptack and Schiebe to make it 7-0.
  • Stonebraker picked up the win with five shutout innings of work, striking out four.
