Softball Splits With Golden Knights on Senior Day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) each drove in three runs as the University of New Haven softball team took the opening game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Rose 10-0 in five innings in Senior Day on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights won the second contest 4-2.

Scoreless through two innings, the Chargers took control of the opener with five runs in the third. After they scored two more in the fourth, New Haven ended the game in the fifth as with two runners on, Vaughan hit her fifth homer of the season, to end the game. In the circle, Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) pitched one-hit ball and recorded 14 of her 15 outs on the ground as she improved to 14-5 on the season and delivered her fifth shutout of the year.

In the second game, the Golden Knights scored first with two runs each in the first and third innings, sandwiched around a New Haven tally in the bottom of the first. The Chargers plated another run in the fifth, but were unable to push anything else across for the game. Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) had two hits in the contest for the Blue and Gold and Butts came on in relief to toss 4.2 more scoreless innings.

For the twinbill, Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) had three hits while Luzzi, Vaughan, Whitlock, Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) and Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) each had two. Overall, Butts pitched 9.2 shutout innings in the DH, surrendering just five hits.

Prior to the game, New Haven honored seniors Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School), Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) for their service to the softball program throughout their careers.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • After neither team scored in the first two innings, the Blue and Gold exploded in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate. With two outs, Vaughan and Whitlock were each hit by a pitch before Luzzi doubled into left center, scoring both runners. Colby followed with an RBI single to plate Luzzi and make it 3-0. A single by Devlin and a walk to Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) loaded the bases for DeLeo who singled to left, plating pinch-runner Vanessa Strohm (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and Devlin, extending the lead to 5-0.
  • Two more runs came across in the fourth as Errera singled, moved to second on an error and third on a wild pitch before a Luzzi single brought her home. On the play, an error by the centerfielder also allowed Whitlock, who had walked in front of Luzzi, to score pushing the lead to 7-0.
  • The Chargers ended the game in the fifth, as with two outs, Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) walked and Errera singled bringing up Vaughan who homered on the ninth pitch of the at-bat, giving New Haven the walk-off win.
  • Butts was magnificent in the circle allowing just one hit and one walk. She recorded 14 of her 15 outs via the ground ball as she picked up her league-leading 14th win of the season.
  • Luzzi and Errera each had two hits with Luzzi and Vaughan driving in three runs each.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • After Saint Rose took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first, New Haven responded with one of its own as Whitlock singled, stole second and came in two batters later on a Colby double.
  • The Golden Knights padded the lead with two more in the third to go on top 4-1.
  • In the fifth, The Blue and Gold clawed closer as Vaughan walked and stole second. She remained there two outs later when Devlin lined a single to left, sending Vaughan to the plate, cutting the lead to 4-2.
  • Whitlock had a pair of hits in the game for the Chargers.
  • Butts came out of the bullpen to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering four hits.

NOTABLE
