SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) each hit fourth inning home runs, but the University of New Haven softball team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the First Round of the NE10 Championship, 6-4 to the Le Moyne Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon.
After Le Moyne took the lead in the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, New Haven used the long ball in the fourth to take its first lead of the game as Vaughan went deep for the sixth time this year and Liptack hit her second big fly of the season to put the Chargers up 3-2. After the Dolphins tied the game in the fifth, the Chargers took the lead back with a sac fly in the sixth. The edge held through the sixth, but in the seventh, a three-run homer for Le Moyne ended the game.
Overall for the day Liptack led the Blue and Gold with three RBI.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Le Moyne scored two runs in the bottom of the third on a homer and an RBI groundout.
- New Haven responded immediately as with one out, Vaughan took a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for her sixth homer and 30th RBI of the season. Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) followed with a single in front of Liptack who launched her second homer of the season, clearing the leftfield wall, putting the Blue and Gold up 3-2.
- The Dolphins were able to manufacture a run with two outs in the fifth to tie the game.
- The Chargers loaded the bases in the sixth as Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and Vaughan walked in front of Schiebe who was hit by a pitch. Liptack lifted a sac fly to right, plating Luzzi for a 4-3 lead.
- The game remained that way until the seventh when Le Moyne came away with the win on a three-run homer.
