SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team picked up its second straight victory, in as many Northeast-10 Conference matches, scoring a four-set (25-20, 23-25, 25-10, 25-22) decision over the American International Yellow Jackets on Saturday. Leading the Blue and Gold on the day was senior middle blocker Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who finished with a match-high 14 kills.
Bussey finished the first two sets without a hitting error, hammering home eight kills in 14 attempts over that stretch, amounting to a .571 average. Overall for the Match, Bussey finished with a .393 hitting percentage with three total miscues in 28 attempts. She also added three digs and four blocks, part of 10 total blocks for the Chargers.
Following the senior in the hitting column was classmate Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) with nine kills and sophomore Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and senior Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) who each chipped in eight. Among the trio, Peterson led all hitters in the match with an impressive .615 hitting percentage, closing out the match without an error in 13 attempts.
As a team, New Haven finished the match hitting .204, posting their best hitting in the opening set where they mustered a match-best 14 kills in 35 attempts with four errors. Overall for the match, the Chargers finished with 48 kills with six different players finishing with at least four.
Playing in a six-two offense, junior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led the pair of setters with 27 assists, adding that to 12 digs to complete the double double. Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) added 14 assists.
Defensively, the Chargers were led by libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) who finished with a career-high 24 digs, her seventh straight match in double figures. In addition to her and Rios, Martins finished with 11 defensive stops, finishing one kill shy of the double double. Nowicki, Peterson and Martins all led the Chargers with five blocks, part of the 10 total for the team
The Blue and Gold returns to the court on Tuesday evening for a third-straight NE10 contest, this time against crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State.
