RINDGE, N.H. - For the second consecutive game, the University of New Haven men's soccer team pulled out a dramatic victory in the final minute when junior Mawasi Charles found the back of the net with 25 seconds remaining to catapult the Chargers past #21 Franklin Pierce 2-1 in Northeast-10 action Saturday evening. It is the first time the Chargers have come away with a victory over a ranked opponent since the team defeated #15 Southern New Hampshire on October 20, 2012.
The game-winner was the first career strike for Charles who is a staple in the midfield for the Chargers.
Sophomore Pablo Perez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) also scored for the Chargers (2-7-0, 2-4-0 NE10), who defeated the Ravens (5-2-1, 3-2-1 NE10) for the third consecutive year. Junior Sukrija Dudic (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) recorded an assist on the game-winner and sophomore Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made seven saves on the night to earn his second win of the season.
The Ravens jumped out to an early lead in the contest, scoring in the ninth minute when Niklas Laudahn found Noam Kolakofsky for the strike, giving Franklin Pierce the early 1-0 advantage. The remainder of the first half was very evenly matched with back and forth action the rest of the way. Franklin Pierce ended the half with a 12-8 advantage in shots and was able to hold the Chargers in check the rest of the way and took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Chargers started the second half on the front foot, when Perez fired a shot on goal less than two minutes into the second stanza but Ravens goalkeeper Jadel Poon-Lewis turned the shot away. After fending off a Raven corner moments later, the Chargers again created an opportunity of their own, earning a corner kick in the 56th minute. On the entry ball, the Chargers drew a foul in the penalty area and Rebelo stepped to the spot and converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season, leveling the score 1-1.
As the contest appeared to be heading to extra time, the Chargers took over possession and pushed up field. With just 25 seconds remaining, Dudic, the hero against American International, flicked a header on to Charles who buried a tough angle shot just under the bar on the near post to give New Haven the dramatic victory.
New Haven will look to extend their current win streak to three games next week when they host Molloy in non-conference action on Wednesday, October 4 at Kayo Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
