WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Alexandria scored a game-high 19 points and recorded her 500
th career rebound for the University of New Haven women's basketball team in a 66-47 win over Franklin Pierce (4-14, 1-12 NE10) at Charger Gymnasium on Tuesday evening, 66-47.
With four total rebounds on the evening, Kerr reached the mark on her fourth board of the game, becoming the 24
th Charger in the program's 42-year history to reach the milestone. Kerr, who averages 6.9 rebounds per game in her career, is the first New Haven player to reach 500 rebounds mark since
Lauren Hebert '16 did in the 2015-16 season. In addition to her rebounds, Kerr's 19 points came on 6-of-16 shooting while getting help from the charity stripe with seven free throws.
Behind Kerr was freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) who played a well-rounded game with 13 points (5-of-16 FG) while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out six assists, tying her season-high. Sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) shot 50 percent from the floor on the night (6-of-12) for 12 points to round out the top-three scorers.
Senior
Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) added seven points for New Haven, junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) scored six points, and junior
Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) netted five points to go along with a career-high four assists.
As a team, New Haven handed out a total of 15 assists on the evening, just three away from their season high. The Chargers are now 7-1 on the season when recording 10 or more assists in regulation. Rebounds were nearly even for both teams with New Haven pulling down 41 and Franklin Pierce grabbing 40. New Haven also had success limiting its turnovers with only eight, only one away from tying their season low of seven against Saint Anselm. On the other side of the ball, New Haven forced 21 Raven turnovers, the ninth game this season causing 20 or more.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven struggled to get going early on as Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 10-6 lead, scoring six unanswered. Kerr broke through with a layup just under two minutes remaining, but Franklin Pierce had the answer with a layup of their own.
- Franklin Pierce held New Haven to 3-of-17 from the field in the opening stanza while each team was scoreless from beyond the arc.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- The Chargers were locked in to start off the second, using a 17-0 run to gain a 13-point advantage over the Ravens. During the span, Kerr chipped in six points, Wormack added four and Pergola and Van Dyke each chipped in three before Franklin Pierce netted a layup with 4:05 remaining in the half to break up the run.
- The Ravens trimmed the lead to 11 points at the midway point, but New Haven already did the damage with the help of a 21-6 second quarter, cementing the 29-18 halftime score.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven kept up the hot shooting in the third quarter, scoring six-straight points with two Pergola jumpers and another by Trowell, before Franklin Pierce found the touch from deep, nailing two three-pointers to trim the lead back down to nine.
- Senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) helped keep the Chargers rolling, finding the mesh on a three-point basket midway through the third. After a Van Dyke layup, Wormack scored the Charger's next eight points by herself before Cubbage ended the run on a layup down low.
- In that 15-0 stretch, six of New Haven's seven field goals were assisted, with Pergola getting three of her six total assists in only 2:49.
- The quarter saw New Haven outscoring the Ravens, 23-12, with the help of a 10-of-17 performance from the field. Wormack was perfect in the frame, going 4-of-4 from the field while also grabbing two rebounds.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven coasted to the finish line, holding a 21-point lead into the final frame. Pergola scored the first Charger bucket of the quarter, getting a pass from Smith for another New Haven assist.
- Kerr added six more points in the final frame, hitting 3-of-3 shots from the field while Trowell and Pergola each added four.
- Franklin Pierce's Jemma Thacker, who finished as the Ravens leading scorer with 15 points, went 3-of-4 from the field in the frame.
The Chargers will play their next two games on the road, first the final meeting against Northeast Division competition as they travel to Southern New Hampshire for an afternoon game against the Penmen. The game, which will be aired live on Fox College Sports, is scheduled for a 4:00 pm opening tip.
