NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) each reached double figures in scoring as the University of New Haven women's basketball team (8-12, 4-11 NE10) fell to the Southern Connecticut State Owls (16-7, 10-6 NE10) at the Moore Field house Wednesday evening.
Kerr netted 12 points on the evening, her 14
th double-figure output of the season and 10
th in the last 11 games. Pergola scored 10 points, while senior
Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) and sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) each had six points. On the boards, Kerr had a game-high nine rebounds, while Pergola and junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) pulled down six rebounds apiece.
The key to Southern Connecticut's success from top to bottom was its three-point shooting, finishing the contest with more three-point field goals (15) than two-point field goals (10) made. The Owls'
Abby Hurlbert could not be stopped from deep, shooting 9-of-16 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- The Owls wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, hitting four three-pointers in the first four-plus minutes of action to jump out to a 14-2 lead.
- Kerr and Trowell each hit jump shots exchanged with two Owl field goals to maintain the score, but Southern Connecticut stayed hot behind the arc, draining another shot from deep to stretch the lead to 15 points.
- Kerr converted on a three-point play to pull the Chargers back within 12, but Southern Connecticut kept pouring in three-point attempts with two more, holding a 27-11 lead at the end of the first.
- Leading the Chargers in the first quarter with five points was Kerr, as Trowell, Talley and Pergola each put up two points.
- The Owls finished the first frame on 7-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc and 10-of-19 from the field.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- The second stanza saw solid defense from the Chargers, holding the Owls to 4-of-14 shooting in the frame.
- Scoring slowed down for each team, as Southern Connecticut hit the first shot of the quarter before two scoreless minutes of action. Wormack ended the cold streak, grabbing an offensive rebound and putting back a layup with 6:20 remaining to spark a 6-2 Charger run.
- Hurlbert connected from long range with just under three minutes remaining before Cubbage and Kerr put in two points each, but Hurlbert answered with her sixth and final three-pointer of the game with one minute until the midway point.
- The Owls added one more three-pointer on their final possession before the buzzer to extend the Owl advantage, 40-23.
- At the half, Kerr led New Haven with nine points and six rebounds, while Pergola and Cubbage each totaled four points.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven scored the first two buckets in the half, but Southern kept up the three-point shooting into the second stanza with two-straight long balls.
- The Chargers scored the final four points of the quarter on a Wormack layup and two Pergola free throws.
- The third quarter saw Southern Connecticut outscoring New Haven 18-13, as Wormack and Pergola led with four points each.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- Kerr opened the final frame up with a jump shot to get to 12 points on the evening with just over nine minutes remaining. Neither team converted on a field goal for two minutes but Pergola hit a fade away shot to reach double digits in scoring.
- New Haven outscored Southern Connecticut 14-11 in the frame with Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) leading in the quarter with four points, all from free throws. Cubbage had three points in the stanza while Kerr, Pergola and junior Oluwaseun Shittu (Johnston, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) each chipped in two.
- New Haven was perfect from the stripe in the fourth quarter, going 6-of-6.
