Men's Soccer Settles for 2-2 Double-Overtime Draw Versus Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team hosted Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Wednesday evening, settling for a 2-2 double-overtime draw with the Greyhounds at a chilly Kathy Zolad Stadium.

The Chargers posted 13 total shots to the Greyhounds 17, however the Blue and Gold had the upper-hand on shots on goal, 9-6. Sophomore Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) and graduate student Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) were the goal scorers for New Haven, with Pappalardo leading the offense with three total shots with all three coming on goal. In goal, junior keeper Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made two saves, while on the other end, Assumption's Sebastian Jimenez made seven stops.

New Haven was knocking on the door early with four shots on goal in the first 22 minutes, before Pappalardo finally broke through with his fourth goal of the season, putting home a rebounded shot originally taken by freshman Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) from the far-right corner of the goal about five yards out. New Haven threatened once again just two minutes later as Jimenez moved toward the front of the box and junior Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) was able to collect the ball and take a look at a goal with no keeper, however his blast went just right. Assumption leveled the match with just six minutes remaining in the first stanza, as a costly foul inside the box allowed Jason Lages to send a penalty shot off the left post and in for his first goal of the season.

After a header shot by Assumption that went wide left to open up the second frame, Connor Willis knocked in the go-ahead goal for the Greyhounds in the 60th minute, as he was able to steal the ball from Lorusso to increase the score to 2-1. Assumption carried that momentum for another 15 minutes with four-straight corner kicks, but on the other side of the pitch, senior Abdullah Alamoudi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Arafat) was tackled inside the box sending Barboto to the line who was able to convert on his fourth penalty kick goal of the season to the bottom left corner of the net. After the equalizer, New Haven put two shots on goal and had another solid chance on an indirect free kick inside the box, but was not able to convert on any additional opportunity sending the match into overtime.

Assumption had the edge on shots, 5-1 in the overtime period, with New Haven's only opportunity coming from Peduzzi who sent his shot high in the final second of the first overtime period. Assumption added three more strikes in the second overtime, but the Charger defense fended off all three as the match ended in a scoreless draw.

New Haven returns to action against Stonehill on Saturday, October 20 for senior day, when the men's soccer program will honor Mawasi Charles (Barataria, Trinidad/St. Anthony's College), George Tighe (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Boys College), Aurochit Patnaik (Mumbai, India/St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)), Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven), Harrison Kaufman (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) and Simao Sousa Branca (Porto, Portugal/Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto).  Kickoff at Kathy Zolad Stadium is slated for 7:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
