Women's Tennis Drops Senior Day Match to Division I UC Irvine

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday at the University of New Haven tennis courts against Division I UC Irvine, falling to the Anteaters, 7-0 in a non-conference match on a cold and blustery day.
 
Prior to the match, the tennis team honored five individuals, including Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton).
 
The Chargers saw its best performances from Varrone and sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) on the day, who each took their match to a tiebreak set. Rodriguez played a hard match against Jacqueline Tsodikova at No. 3 singles, winning the first set, 6-4, before falling in the second set, 6-0 and the tiebreak, 10-5. Varrone also won her first set at No. 6 singles, 6-3, but dropped the next set 6-1 before coming up just short in the tiebreak by a slim 12-10 margin.
 
The fifth-seeded women's tennis team will return to action in the Northest-10 Conference Championship on Wednesday, October 24 against the No. 4 seeded Le Moyne Dolphins. Match time at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y. is slated for 1:00 pm.
