ALBANY, N.Y. – With a potential postseason bid on the line, the University of New Haven men's soccer played late into the 105th minute before dropping a double overtime 1-0 decision at Saint Rose on Friday night. With this decision, the Chargers close out the 2018 campaign with a 4-11-2 overall record and a 4-7-2 mark in Northeast-10 action.
A relatively quiet first half included just six total shots combined by the two squads with the Golden Knights holding a 4-2 edge. Sophomore keeper Justin Dansereau (Billerica, Mass./Central Catholic) closed out the half with a pair of saves, the only registered by either goalie in the first 45 minutes, while they were also the only two in the game that the Chargers net minder was forced to make.
Saint Rose was the first to register a shot in the contest, that coming in the 13th minute and forcing Dansereau to corral his first save. That shot began a flurry of three within a four minute span, the middle of which was the first of the night for New Haven off the boot of Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme). The Chargers would also get the final shot of the half in the 37th minute when Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) sent one over the top.
Coming out of the halftime intermission New Haven was on the attack early with a pair of shots that came three seconds apart in the 49th minute. The attempts from Barboto and Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) resulted in the first two saves of the night from the Golden Knights Ryan Henning. The Chargers kept the threat alive following those two shots, forcing a pair of corner kicks before Saint Rose would manage their first attempt of the half.
Saint Rose's best attempt in the second 45 minute period came in the 55th minute when, despite it not registering as a shot on goal, a header by Orel Taib ricocheted off the crossbar. New Haven answered right back with a shot 80 seconds later from Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven). That shot began a series of five over the next six minutes as the Golden Knights were unable to get a shot off until the 71st minute.
The Blue and Gold looked to strike late in regulation, forcing Henning to make two additional saves on shots that came just 19 seconds apart from Barboto and Peduzzi in the 87th minute. Those two shots would be the final for either team before the stalemate extended into extra time.
In the first 10 minute overtime period, the Chargers offense was the only to muster a shot as the only threat by the Golden Knights was thwarted by an off sides call. In total, the Chargers took five shots in the first extra period, two of which were blocked by the Saint Rose defense while the final one forced Henning to make a key save with just 18 seconds remaining in the period.
In the second overtime, the teams would exchange the first two shots of the period with the second coming from New Haven's Aurochit Patnaik (Mumbai, India/St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)) which again forced Henning into action. Just under two minutes after that strike, the Golden Knights tallied the only point of the night in the 105th minute when Victor Voncalves-Rocha finished off a pass from Ismael Aourid with a touch to the lower corner of the net.
