McMahon Scores Second Goal of the Season as Chargers Fall to Bentley 2-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman midfielder Alyssa McMahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) net her second goal of the season on Saturday night as the University of New Haven women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on Senior Night at a rainy Kathy Zolad Stadium. With the decision, the Chargers close out the 2018 campaign with a 2-13-2 overall record.

Prior to the game, the Chargers honored seven seniors who have left an indelible mark wearing the Blue and Gold; Emily Bergold (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue)Josette Breeden (Vacaville, Calif./Vanden), Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Marisa Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven), Grace Scorcia (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), Annie White (West Nyack, N.Y./Pearl River) and Kyra Wolonsavich (Beverly, Mass./Beverly).

McMahon's goal came as an equalizer against the Falcons in the 51st minute when she finished off a cross from Scorcia inside the six-yard box. Wolonsavich, who earned the start in her final game with the Chargers, finished the night with 10 saves, her third time this season with double digit stops.

The Chargers opened up the contest on the attack with Bergold striking a pair of shots in the first 60 seconds, but it would be the only offense for either team until early in the ninth minute when Bentley took its first attempt of the night which forced Wolonsavich into action for the first time.

The next two shots from the Falcons would again result in saves, the first from Wolonsavich while Scorcia came up big with a goal-line save on a header shot by the Falcons Alyssa Valente. New Haven answered that offensive attack with back-to-back shots of its own, the second of which forced Bentley's keeper Kat Hassapis into action for the first time on the night.

Bentley was able to break the scoreless stalemate early in the 30th minute when Valente converted on her third shot of the evening, tapping in a low cross deep inside the box that came to the opposite corner. Both teams would have a couple of opportunities late in the half, however Bentley would hold on for the slim margin at the intermission.

Coming out of the break, Bentley would be on the attack out of the gates with a pair of shots inside the first two minutes, with Wolonsavich called into action on the second attempt. New Haven responded to those early attempts with one from Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) that went hit, but just under three minutes later McMahon would break through for her second goal of the season on a cross from Scorcia.

Bentley looked to answer quickly after that equalizer, and was able to about 15 minutes later when Emily McGrath took advantage of a defensive miscue that allowed her a shot that just missed the outstretch arms of Wolonsavich to her right.

New Haven would place two more shots on goal in the final 25 minutes, the second of which came just as time expired but forced Hassapis to make a crucial save to secure the victory.
