MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven volleyball team boosted its Northeast-10 record with a four-set victory (25-11, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19) over the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday. Leading the Blue and Gold on the afternoon was sophomore middle hitter Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who led a trio of players in double figures with a dozen kills and just one error.
Joining Garden with 12 kills in the match was freshman outside Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), while Garden led the duo with a .379 hitting percentage as her 12 hammers came on 29 attempts with the lone error. Rounding out the Chargers offensive leaders was junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who collected 11 kills on a .250 average.
Overall six total players contributed on the offense with senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) chipping in a half dozen while leading the team with 25 assists, part of a double double, adding 21 digs on defense. In a two-setter rotation for New Haven sophomore Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) added nine assists while also finishing in double figures defensively with 12 digs.
Leading New Haven's defense on the day was senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who returned 25 of the Penmen's attempts. The Chargers also collected nine points in the serving game led by sophomore Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who finished with three aces. Mirmina and Chan each added a pair of unreturned serves.
Defensively, the Chargers blocking game resulted in five points on the day, led by Garden who finished with three of the five.
The Chargers will close out their non-conference and regular season road schedule when they next take the court in the battle of Interstate 95 with a key regional match-up against the Bridgeport Purple Knights. First serve from Harvey Hubble Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
