Field Hockey Falls Short in Friday Night Matchup at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Playing under the lights on Friday night the University of New Haven Field Hockey team dropped a 6-0 Northeast-10 Conference matchup to the Franklin Pierce Ravens.

The Ravens were on the board quickly, scoring the first goal of the night in the 11th minute. Franklin Pierce would add three more goals in the opening stanza, but the Chargers defense killed six of the eight defensive penalties faced in the first half.

The defense continued to stand strong in the second half and did not allow the Ravens to score off of a penalty corner. Franklin Pierce added to their lead and scored two more goals halfway through the second half. In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) had 10 saves on the night.

New Haven saw two opportunities in the second half as Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) had the first shot for the Chargers but it was blocked. The Blue and Gold drew an offensive corner in the 48th minute, but were unable to convert as the shot from Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) was also blocked.

Up next for the Chargers is an NE10 matchup against cross-town foe Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, October 9. Game time at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium is set for 7:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network for fans who are unable to attend the game.
