WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Led by three players in double figures, the University of New Haven women's basketball team (2-1, 0-1 NE10) came up short in its 2018-19 home opener, dropping a 65-59 decision to the Adelphi Panthers (2-2, 2-0 NE10). Leading the Blue and Gold was senior guard Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) who finished with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals.
Joining Kerr in leading the Chargers was freshman Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and senior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) who rounded out a trio in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. With her 13 against the Panthers, DeBose has now posted double figures in all three games on the season.
As a team, New Haven shot 33.3 percent from the field, making 20-of-60 field goal attempts including eight three point buckets. Leading the way individually was Debose and junior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) who each finished 3-of-6, while redshirt freshman Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) added five points, finishing 2-of-3 from the field.
The Chargers maintained their quality ball control from the opening two games at the Bridgeport Conference Crossover Classic, limiting themselves to just 11 turnovers against Adelphi, while defensively forcing the Panthers into 26 miscues. The Chargers turned those 26 turnovers into 21 points, leading the Panthers 21-13 in points off turnovers. New Haven also held a 9-0 advantage in second chance points, despite trailing in the rebound battle 37-24.
New Haven will take its show across the ocean when they next appear on the hardwood, that coming at the Puerto Rico Clasico in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. Overall, the Chargers will play three games while in Puerto Rico, taking on Puerto Rico-Bayamon (Nov. 21, 3:00 p.m.), Upper Iowa (Nov. 22, 5:00 p.m.) and Central Oklahoma (Nov. 23, 3:00 p.m.). The trip to Puerto Rico is the first of its kind for the Chargers.
