Men's Basketball Cruises to Third Straight Win, Takes Down AIC 74-51

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) finished with 19 and freshman Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J. /Trenton Catholic Academy) added 18 as the University of New Haven men's basketball team (3-0, 2-0 NE10) cruised to its third straight victory on Tuesday night, defeating Northeast-10 rival American International 74-51.

Overall, Bailey and Lane were part of three players in double figures, joined by redshirt-sophomore Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who chipped in 10 points. Also among the leaders was junior forward Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) who nearly completed his second-straight double double with nine points and 10 rebounds, closing out the night perfect from the field on three attempts.

As a team, the Chargers finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field, connecting on 28 total field goals, including 10 from beyond the three point arc. In addition to Felizor's 3-for-3 shooting performance, Lane finished 6-of-10 and Bailey was 7-of-15 to round out the leaders, while both also finished with a trio of three pointers.

Felizor's 10 rebounds were part of 37 total as the Chargers led the battle of the boards 37-31. In addition to Felizor, Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished with six while Bailey, Lane and Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) all finished with five boards. Among the Chargers 37 rebounds were 13 on the offensive glass, which they turned into 20 second chance points, leading that battle 20-8. Lane also added to his tally with four assists and a pair of steals.

Defensively, New Haven stepped up in the second half after allowing the Yellow Jackets to shoot 50 percent (10-of-20) in the opening half. Through the final 20 minutes, AIC could only muster six field goals, connecting more times from the free throw line (7-of-9) than they did from the field. Overall in the second half, American International shot just 20.8 percent, dropping their total for the game to 32.7 percent (16-of-49). The Chargers also forced American International into 13 turnovers, which they then turned into 14 points.

New Haven will close out a three-game homestand on Saturday evening when they host the Concordia Clippers for a non-conference match-up. Tipoff at Charger Gymnasium has been adjusted from its original time and will now tip at 6:00 p.m.
