TRUJILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico – Despite a hot shooting fourth quarter, the University of New Haven women's basketball (4-2 overall) team dropped its final game of the Puerto Rico Clasico 71-51 to the Central Oklahoma Bronchos (6-0 overall) on Friday afternoon.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the day was a pair of starters, freshman guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and junior forward Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) who each finished with nine points. Overall, eight different players contributed to the offense with sophomore Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and senior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) following with eight and seven points, respectively.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 33.3 percent from the field (19-of-57), while closing out the contest shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) in the fourth quarter alone. Individually, Wormack had the hot hand on the afternoon, connecting on all four of her field goal attempts.
The Blue and Gold also trailed in the battle of the boards by a final margin of 36-34 with senior guard Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) leading the way with eight rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass. As a team, New Haven finished with 13 offensive rebounds, turning those into 11 second chance points. Kerr also added five points on the afternoon.
Defensively, New Haven forced the Bronchos into 16 turnovers, the first game this season where the Chargers have forced less than 20 turnovers. From those 16 miscues by Central Oklahoma, the Chargers net 16 points.
Follow its visit to the island of Puerto Rico, the Chargers return to the Nutmeg State for a date with crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University. The Chargers and Owls are scheduled to meet in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team on Wednesday, November 28 with opening tip slated for 5:30 p.m.
