KINGSTON, R.I. – In its 2018-19 debut to the public, the University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a 66-61 decision to the Division I Rhode Island Rams in an exhibition match-up at the Ryan Center. Leading the Blue and Gold on the afternoon was senior guard Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) who finished with 18 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 effort at the free throw line.
Overall, Kerr was one of two players in double figures with rookie forward Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) chipped in 16 points in her first game in a college uniform. Among the leading duo, DeBose led the way, shooting .538 from the field, connecting on 7-of-13 field goal attempts. Joining Kerr and DeBose in leading six total players that added to the offense was junior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and senior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) who each finished with eight points. Sophomore Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and senior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) rounded out New Haven's scoring with seven and four points, respectively.
Among all the scorers, Wormack posted the best individual shooting percentage, making three of her five attempts for a .600 average, while as a team, New Haven shot 35.9 percent overall (23-of-64), while from beyond the three point arc, the Blue and Gold made just two of their 17 attempts. The Chargers did excel at the free throw line, finishing the game a perfect 13-of-13 with Kerr's performance standing out among the team.
As a team, New Haven trailed in the battle of the boards by a 37-28 margin with Oge and Cubbage leading the way, each finishing with six rebounds. All told, seven different players finished with at least one rebounds.
In addition to her seven points, Pergoal finished with a team-best eight assists, which is the most she has dished out in a single game in a Charger uniform. Oge also chipped in with a pair of blocks, while the rookie post DeBose added five steals as the Chargers collected 12 total picks, forcing Rhode Island into 27 turnovers. Off of those Rhode Island miscues, the Chargers were able to score 33 points, while they also finished with a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint.
New Haven will now turn its attention to the 2018-19 season opener with a pair of games on the docket at the Bridgeport Conference Crossover Classic. The inaugural game of the season will come against the host Purple Knights on Saturday, November 10 with a 2:30 p.m. tip scheduled at Harvey Hubbel Gymnasium.
