Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Shaker Makes 19 Saves, Field Hockey Drops Season Finale at Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H.- Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made 19 saves on the night for the Chargers, but the University of New Haven field hockey team fell to Southern New Hampshire, 6-0, Tuesday night. The Chargers close out the 2018 season with a 2-15 overall record and a 1-12 record in Northeast-10 play.

After allowing an early first half goal, the defense held the Penmen scoreless for 18 minutes. Shaker stood tall against an attacking half from Southern New Hampshire, and in a slew of shots by the Penmen, made three saves in a row, followed by another two back-to-back saves five minutes later. The Chargers limited the Penmen to two goals at the half.

Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) had the first opportunity on the night, but was unable to convert as her shot off the penalty corner was blocked. The offense had a swing of momentum towards the end of the first half, firing off three shots and challenging the Southern New Hampshire defense to two offensive penalty corners. Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) also had a chance, firing a shot off the second penalty corner, which was saved.

Despite playing a defensive second half, the offense saw a burst of energy in the 58th minute with three offensive corner opportunities. Taylor Geaglone's (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) first shot was blocked and after a penalty corner, her second shot hit the post. Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) had another look on goal as her second shot of the game was saved by the goalie. The Penmen would connect on four second half goals to put the game away.

It was a historic second season for the Chargers; one that saw the Blue and Gold secure its first victory in program history, a 3-2 win over Mercy, and its first ever NE10 conference win, a 2-1 win over Southern Connecticut State on the Blue and Gold turf.
