WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In a rematch of the regular season finale, the No. 1 seed University of New Haven women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the No. 8 seed Saint Anselm Hawks in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. With the loss, New Haven falls to 25-5 on the season and will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, November 11 at 10:00 p.m. to learn whether they will earn a bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Championship.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was junior right side hitter Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who was the only Charger to finish in double figures with a dozen kills. She also closed out the night with a .435 attack percentage, suffering just two errors in 23 attempts.
Joining her in leading the offense was sophomore middle blocker Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) with nine kills and outside hitters Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who each finished with eight hammers. Utilizing a two-setter rotation, senior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led the way with 25 assists while sophomore Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) chipped in nine. Overall, the duo led the Chargers to a .210 hitting average with a combined 43 kills in 124 attempts.
Defensively, New Haven was led by Chan who was the only player on the team to finish in double figures with 13 digs. Senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) followed with eight digs while Rios and Greathead each contributed with seven. The Chargers also combined for five blocks on the night led by Garden with three.
